Taken by the receptionist

A paving owner is out on a job site all day.

Customers call to ask for a driveway estimate, to check when the crew is coming, or to move a job the rain pushed back.

Those calls come in while he's running a crew. He needed someone to pick up in the company's name and write it all down.

What she did on each call.

  • Answered in the company's name, with its own greeting.
  • Asked the job, the place and how soon.
  • Never guessed at a price. Most calls were estimate requests, and she left pricing to the owner.
  • Wrote down the job, the address and the best number to call back, for him to return the call.

244 customer calls in about eight weeks.

About 6 in 7 came on weekdays between 7 AM and 5 PM.

  • 208 of 244 came on weekdays, 7 AM to 5 PM
  • 36 of 244 came in the evening or on a weekend

16 came on weekday evenings, 5 PM to 9 PM. 20 came on weekends.

How we counted

How we counted.

The line
Every call to the company's number went to the receptionist. So these numbers show when customers called.
The dates
About eight weeks. Weekdays means Monday to Friday, 7 AM to 5 PM. Labor Day counts with the weekends.
All calls
410 calls reached the receptionist, with tests left out.
What counts
Calls from customers who said what they needed, or asked about a job already under way.
Left out
Tests, spam and robocalls, sales pitches, job seekers, wrong numbers, and hang-ups or calls with no stated reason.
The source
The receptionist's call records for that line.

This counts calls answered. It does not count jobs booked or money made.
